Free Civil 3D 2010 Demo (Petaluma)

Ideate is pleased to welcome Jim Krautner of Coastland Civil Engineering to the North Bay Civil/GIS User Group on January 13 to provide a Civil 3D 2010 project demonstration.

Jim will use a real project to demonstrate the time savings possible with Civil 3D. He will demonstrate a project that was started in Land Desktop, where three alignments were created: left gutter lip, right gutter lip and centerline. Jim will extract those alignments from Land Desktop into Civil 3D 2010 and then create profiles, a finish grade centerline, an assembly and cross sections with cross slope labels. Join us to learn how Civil 3D will help you save time and avoid recreation and manually labeling of each cross sections when clients’ cross slope requirements prompt adjustments to the finish grade profile.

Registration
Event is free, but space is limited, so register online today to reserve your seat.
Who Should Attend
Those who currently use, or are considering, Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D civil engineering software.

About the Presenter
Jim Krautner is a Senior Engineering Technician with over 20 years experience as a surveyor/Cad designer. He currently works for Coastland Civil Engineering. AB204-4 Better Decisions, Better Buildings, Early Energy Analysis
Studies show that most crucial decisions happen in the first moments of the design process. Architects need tools that will assist them in creating better and more sustainable building projects. This lecture focuses on which tools are available, when to use them, and how to get the maximum benefit from these energy analysis tools. To make better, more energy efficient, sustainable buildings, we need to make better strategic decisions early.

To see what the excitement was about, visit AU Online for the screencast from Matt Miyamoto's AU 2009 presentation.

CV318-4 Connecting the Dots: Creating AutoCAD® Civil 3D® Surfaces with LIDAR Data
Technological improvements continue to increase the availability of LIDAR data. However, we have not always had access to the tools necessary for taking advantage of these large data sets. With potentially millions of points, Civil 3D now provides us with a tool that we can use to take advantage of LIDAR data for our designs. In this class, Matt reviews some of the issues associated with LIDAR data, and goes over the tools available in Civil 3D that allow you to manage your data more efficiently and reduce drawing file size. See how Civil 3D allows us to connect the dots, creating surface models that we can use to develop layouts for master plans, flood boundaries for mapping and drainage analysis, and preliminary site design for permitting and earthwork estimations.

    Primary software: AutoCAD Civil 3D.

Presented by Matt Miyamoto, P.E., Infrastructure Solutions Application Specialist

Miyamoto is a licensed Civil Engineer in the state of Hawaii. He received a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and has 7 years of private sector design experience which he applies in his role as an application specialist with Ideate, Inc. Miyamoto’s project experience includes residential and commercial site development, private and public sewer, water and drainage systems, harbors improvements, and roadway improvements. While in Hawaii, Matt was involved in multidisciplinary projects for City and County agencies, State Departments, the Army COE and private developers.

Study in Success - Revit Leads SERA Architects to LEED® Gold

Ideate is proud to announce publication of its latest Study in Success entitled “Revit Leads SERA Architects to LEED® Gold” both online and in a limited print edition.

The subject of the study is SERA Architects’ LEED® Gold award-winning project, The Courtyard by Marriott Portland City Center. Designed by BIM-focused Portland-based SERA Architects and developed by Sage Hospitality, the hotel stands where a vacant and deteriorating bank/office building once stood in Portland’s urban center.

Additionally, the project is prominently featured in the Portland Business Journal Sustainable Oregon, November 20, 2009 article, “New LEED® Gold Building Brightens Portland Cityscape.”

The Ideate Study in Success reveals how SERA Architects undertook and accomplished a major eco-friendly building renovation project, one that achieves remarkable efficiencies in energy consumption and water use, provides travelers with excellent comfort and amenities, minimizes impact on the environment and embellishes the aesthetic of the city. The Courtyard by Marriott Portland City Center has recently been awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. It is the first hotel in the Pacific Northwest to receive such a high level of recognition and Marriott’s first LEED® Gold of any of its brands.

In preparation for Ideate’s creation of the Study in Success, SERA Architects' Associate and Marketing Manager Kristy Edmark, initiated an extensive interview process that included key staff members: SERA Principal Joe Pinzone, Associate and Architect Gary Golla, Job Captain Jon DeLeonardo and Director of Interior Design Lisa Zangerle. In the course of their interviews, SERA team members shed light on how the firm utilized BIM-focused Autodesk software and employed Ideate training and technical support.

AutoCAD 2010 – Performance wins for architects

Keeping ahead in the current economic climate is a challenge that we all have to address. The last thing you need is to be let down by slow delivery or poor presentation.

Skipping a software release is often posed as an economy measure, but it is one that can backfire if it leaves you without access to the latest efficiency improvements. Delivering quality projects on time and within budget needs those tools to produce the results required by today’s demanding clients.

Autodesk has released an AutoCAD 2010 Productivity Study which is the result of research and analysis undertaken by Cambashi, an independent consulting and analyst firm with offices in the UK and the US. The firm has taken a close look at the capabilities of AutoCAD 2010. Working with an architectural practice, Cambashi devised and carried out a productivity study comprised of a series of tests to investigate the benefits of AutoCAD 2010 for the architect. By making a comparison with an earlier release of AutoCAD, specifically AutoCAD 2007, the tests have been able to show where real progress towards business goals can be achieved.

    SPECIAL FEATURE on goStructural.com

From start to finish, leading structural engineering firms keep pace through diversification and maximizing teamwork

    By Lynn Petrak

Not all finish lines lead from a straight path. Some races are run on circular tracks, while others cut through jagged terrain. Those competing in boating regattas must adjust their sails and speed based on the prevailing winds and weather.

The same can be said for performances turned in by businesses, including structural engineering firms.
